Tim Christensen in the Center Gallery– The Center for Maine Craft presents an exhibition of prints, books and clay work by Tim Christensen, October 5 – November 19, 2017. The exhibition will feature new works created during and in response to the artist’s 2017 journey to Sydney, Australia via container ship. “In my work, I document the natural systems, as I understand them, that I see in my surroundings here in coastal Maine. On my travels to Australia, I will pass through areas rarely encountered by artists, and I will similarly be recording what I see there, although in this case will be etching on copper (as raw porcelain and freighters don’t always get along!). I am seeking to make a permanent record of my observations, of the life, the sky, the sea, in the spirit of 30,000 years of potters have before me. Sgraffito has always been a medium in which the potter and the historian become one and the same. I feel that this spirit is still valuable, and increasingly so, as our world changes at an increasing rate. My work with sgraffito in wood kilns, with their chaotic turbulence, records both the natural systems as I understand them, and the chaos or disorder which is rapidly transforming them.” – Tim Christensen ABOUT THE ARTIST Tim Christensen has been working in clay since 1999, and teaching the medium since 2002. His iconic etchings, on porcelain sculptures and vessels, of the plants and animals inhabiting the woods and waters of Maine, are collected world-wide, and seek to record the rapidly changing natural systems upon which we all rely. He sees himself as a participant in a 30,000 year tradition of potters recording human history, and our relationship to the natural world. His work has appeared in such publications as Ceramics
