When a Jewish-American war photographer feels compelled to assist a young refugee who steps in front of her camera,  she calls an old friend to translate but hesitates to reveal why she is so drawn to the boy. This poetic, decade-spanning drama explores how we each define and find our own malja (refuge). Affiliate Artist Bess Welden’s Refuge * Malja * ملجأ was developed at the 2017 Little Festival of the Unexpected.

Maine Songwriters Association Live Recording

The Maine Songwriters Association and Boothbay Region TV have teamed up to produce a monthly live show, Maine Songwriters Live. The November program will be broadcast from the historic upstairs bar of the Opera House on November 17th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Singers will be Charles Bernier and Michael Krapovicky. We welcome banjo legend Béla Fleck for his third-time appearance on the CCA stage. He’s joined by tabla genius Zakir Hussain and double-bass master Edgar Meyer for an intricate, conversational performance. As a special treat, they’ll be joined by Rakesh Chaurasia, an Indian flutist, who plays the bansuri, an Indian bamboo flute. Moving between the realms of bluegrass, classical and world music, these friends are widely considered to be the leading virtuosi on their respective instruments.
